It took me some time to write this review. Still, after thinking through the story, I cannot give words to how much I love, Love, Edy. First, let me say that Shewanda Pugh has given me something I've craved since I started reading romances ---- multi-dimensional people of color. Thank you, Shewanda. It was so refreshing to read about this beautiful, complicated, flawed, dedicated, compassionate character like Edy Phelps. Edy popped off the pages for me, namely, because she was so different. She was compassionate, yet elitist. She was a fighter, yet she was scared to take chances. She was shrewd, yet fell victim to her own choices. I love that Edy was a girl of color who lived a driven life. And that we met a young man of color who was sexy, compassionate, and full of love. Shewanda in my opinion proved that you don't have to sacrifice good literary writing when writing romance. you can have moments that make you blush and those quiet beautiful moments that only thoughtful writing can bring it to life.

There is so much to discuss in this. Did I mention that I love Edy. I find her so refreshing. I find Shewanda's writing of a confused, insecure, in-love, 14 year-old girl to be pretty much true. How would a young girl who has no confidence in her body or her worth handle the possibility of losing her best friend? Not many people would be able to muster that day in and day out. Yet Edy did it the best way she could.

And Hassan... Sigh. I loved Hassan. I loved the quiet, yet explosive way he loved Edy. I loved his rise to God-like stature in football. I loved that although he is told by countless people how great he is, deep down, he doubts himself and the only person who makes him believe him himself - is his love - Edy.

Superb writing. Great character and story development. Completely engaging and captivating. Just beautiful. I guess you can tell that I really liked this book.

I thought this would be simply a coming of age tale. I was slightly disappointed because I did not want to read about puppy love and high school drama. I decided to continue on with this story because of the quality of the writing. I am more than pleased with that decision.

Readers are introduced to high school freshmen Edy and Hassan and two unique families - one Indian and Hindu, the other African-American and Christian. A life long friendship blossoms into love with the challenges of parental expectations and adolescence. Throw in an obsessive teenager with a dark past, mother/daughter antagonism, testosterone engorged football players, and a drive-by shooting and you have one hell of a story. This is not one of those stories with a whole lot of drama and mayhem but a slow build up to a cliffhanger. A freaking cliffhanger! But I've been so totally bewitched by this author that I could not muster up the indignation.

So I guess you can tell that I really like this book and I highly recommend it to everyone - even 40 year old women like myself.
Shewanda Pugh gently pulls the reader in from the first sentences of the book with her mastery of the language, with prose as gentle as poetry. She weaves a tale in which a rich mix of different cultures intertwine to create a novel story arc. The reader quickly becomes invested in the main character Edy, and the relationships in the story flow very naturally from the interplay between the characters. The best news for the reader who finishes this book feeling like Edy and other characters in the book have become friends? You can look forward to several sequels to Love Edy that continue the tale of these wonderful characters caught up in a rich multicultural tangle of complex motivations and interactions. Although this is marketed in the Young Adult category it is a rich story that can easily appeal across a wide array of ages.
I read this a while ago but just got around to reviewing it. Let's just say when I read this on my Fire tablet, I got to the end in the middle of the night, saw the link to the next book in the series on the screen (thanks, ), and next thing I knew, I'd purchased Bittersweet and read a bit before I finally went to sleep. It was that urgent--I normally wait a little between books in a series or get so frustrated with cliffhangers that I just stop caring.

The main storyline --the "will-they-won't-they" between Edy and Hassan is well-done. It gets intensely emotional at times, and the flashbacks do a great job of painting a picture of their relationship before things got complicated. Both have their respective harems to deal with, though Edy's leans more toward philia--her male family members and friends wouldn't get between the pair, for the most part. Their biggest obstacles are really themselves and their insecurities, though Wyatt tries his best to be a factor.

Speaking of Wyatt, throughout the entire series, I feel conflicted about him, and that's a good thing. He's not a villain in the sense that he's an outright antagonist for Edy, but he definitely managed to irritate me when I wasn't feeling sorry for him. I actually liked him at first, but in the end (after 3 books) I just think he has potential.

That said, Edy and Hassan aren't exactly perfect heroes. Edy is manipulative in her own way, which explains the friction between her and her outright manipulative mother. Plus, Hassan was terrible to Wyatt from the jump, and it's a shame everyone else just went along with it.

Honestly, my favorite character might just be Ronnie Bean. I wouldn't mind reading a book about him and his issues with his parents and his adventures in New York.

As far as the ending goes, it was a jolt after the satisfaction on the climax and the subsequent wind-down. I usually roll my eyes at dramatic cliffhangers, but it was the perfect point in the narrative to end the novel.

I enjoyed the entire series (aside from a criticism that will have to wait for my review of Wrecked), and I recommend it for anyone who likes romance, tension, and a good coming-of-age story.
