I've just finished this series and am pleased with the completed work.My intent is to rate this series between 4 and 5 stars, so I'll be rounding up for some of the books, like this one.
I liked the additional characters introduced. Themes continue to resonate well with reasonable pacing between plot exposition and action.
The main character roughly hits my 'low' in likability in this book, but as I expected, he does rebound pretty well later in the series. This book is not significantly harmed by this, and the plot and dialogue make up for it.
There were no awkward 3rd-party perspective story retellings similar to those mentioned in my previous review throughout the rest of the series.

The Pool and the Pedestal The Seraphinium Book 2 eBook Daniel McHugh Reviews
I love this series, I wish he would make a movie out of it.
I enjoyed book 1 of this series but felt the author wasn't as polished as he could have been. The story was great but some minor distractions kept pulling me from the narrative. Book 2 proves that practice makes perfect. The story gets even stronger and the distractions have disappeared. This is a solid piece of writing that left me wanting to move on to the next book in the series.
Great characters. Love this author. He keeps you longing for more.
I will need to find the next volume now
Just bought this book as a Christmas gift for myself and was not disappointed. McHugh's second offering builds upon the momentum of the first, expanding his story and his world masterfully. While new characters and lands await, I was most impressed by the richness and depth of McHugh's mythology. For a reader who enjoys immersion in the grandness of an alternate existence, this book delivers. I look forward to release of the third book.
I made it through all of these books in this series and fell in love with it! Highly recommended. It is similar to Lord of the rings but very different. The reviewers who thought it was a knock off should really read their books again! This was a great series and I recommend it highly! I think we will hear more about it in the future!
Books 1 through 3 of the Seraphinium series ended much too soon. The characters are interesting and consistent. The plot twists are legion. A writing style reminiscent of Chronicles of Narnia or Lord of the Rings.
As a former editor I was elated to find the books seem to be professionally edited with hardly any sentences I would question or change.
I've asked to be on Daniel McHugh's mailing list so I can keep reading.
The Trees and the Night (The Seraphinium)
The Pool and the Pedestal (The Seraphinium)
The Merchant and the Menace (The Seraphinium)
Although book 1 seemed slow going, this book 2 steps the story into high gear! With the help of the Grey Elves and others, the Zodrians are preparing for war with Amird's forces of chaos. New friends and foes are revealed and some surprises are in store for Kael and crew. Daniel McHugh paints wonderful portraits and creates very interesting characters (Granu, son of Grannak may very well be one of my faovorite characters I've ever read). I'm really loving this series now and can't wait to see what happens next! On to book 3!
