Story is great - book is awful. I finally picked the book up off my counter to read it. By the time I got to page 96, pages started falling out!!! Very disappointed in the quality. I have about 5 pages so far that just fell out and it's past the time to let me return it. I'm only on page 120 and this book will have to be thrown away when I'm done. It won't be able to even go into my library collection.

The Dark Lord of Derkholm Gollancz Diana Wynne Jones 9780575075368 Books Reviews

after reading some of Diana Wynne Jones' books, I was Hooked! My daughter laughs and tells me they're a bit young, but she hasn't read them,,yet. I find them beautifully written, easy to lose ones self in and a downright pleasure to read. When most of the adult books are full of meanness, and bloodshed , what a pleasure to smile as you read and thoroughly enjoy the imagination of this writer! now I'm just waiting for another episode to this and "Year of the Griffin". Chrestomanci was good, this series was much better!
I just finished this book and it's wonderful! I love Diana Wynne Jones novels, I started with the Chronicles of Chrestomanci long ago and just got around to this series. The Dark Lord of Derkholm is a fantastic story, it's really funny, too. It starts off with our two heroes, Derk and his son Blade, being introduced; arguing with each other as they will from time to time throughout the book. This is a fun story about a world of people who have been made to turn their country into a theme park for the tourists from another world. These "Pilgrim Parties" come through once a year to be guided through on tours through this magical world. The Pilgrims come from a world not too much unlike our own. But the Pilgrim Parties destroy much of the world on their way through each year. So this year, the rulers of this world decide that they have to put a stop to it... thus Derk is made the "Dark Lord" this year, and the chaos ensues...

Overall this is a story about a very interesting and loving family and the trials that they must endure to save their own world... all the while, not really having any idea what they're doing. It's incredibly funny and it's a very touching family story underneath. I loved it!
Great book, I've read it several times and couldn't resist getting it on my kindle for easy reading everywhere.
Forced to entertain tourists for the dreaded Mr. Chesney, the residents of a magical world finally fight back. After four decades of abuse, the Oracles give a very strange solution to the problem - make Derk of Derkholm the Dark Lord.
Jones is usually little lighter than this, but her premise that one magical world has been contracted to provide harrowing tours to off worlders year after year and is rebelling after forty years, means there is death and pain mixed with lighter moments. Predictions come true, but plans fail in this book about contract breaking. Year of the griffin is lighter. The objectors have apparently missed the serious tone of fairy tales, young adult novels in general, and the wars in Narnia and Middle Earth. Balancing the family drama and character development with plot seemed more challenging in this book, because there are no many fronts to be faced.
A whimsical story about a family in a magical realm who try to cope with being in charge of their father being dubbed the Dark Lord for a year of tours from the nonmagical world, as a ruthless tycoon from that world uses a demon he captured to control them all and make them do his bidding. I really liked the main characters and the story.
Dark Lord of Derkholm is a very, very funny book--providing you're familiar with the genre and tropes it's satirizing. While it's geared for the YA market, I wouldn't recommend it for the 12-and-under set--not because it's too violent or too complicated, but because it's much funnier if you're old enough to enjoy the older characters--Derk, Querida--see just how well Wynne Jones depicts sulking teenagers, be they human or griffin--and have had enough lit classes to recognize how Wynne Jones plays with various literary conventions--deus ex machina will never be quite the same.

The basic set-up is a what if. As in what if you really could visit a world like the ones in epic fantasy books with wizards, elves, dragons, griffins and an evil dark lord in need of overthrowing? Better yet, what if you could go on a quest to overthrow aforesaid dark lord? Wynne Jones takes this premise and then takes it further--what if that "quest" was a tour and the various wizards, dragons, etc. were rather normal people in their magical ways, but being forced to create these quests every year, despite the economic, environmental and social havoc they wreak on this fantasy world?

From the premise, Wynne Jones' imagination runs rampant--a hybrid human/griffin family, a lisping winged horse--even a pretty neat and politically pointed plot turn.

What the book doesn't have, by the way, is a gang rape. Yeesh, you really have to be reading into things to get that out of the scene. It's clearly an attack, but it's also clear that things were stopped. Which, of course, is a riff on the imperiled heroine trope, though in this case instead of rescuing the heroine from, the heroine's rescued by the . . .nah, you should just read it.
Story is great - book is awful. I finally picked the book up off my counter to read it. By the time I got to page 96, pages started falling out!!! Very disappointed in the quality.
