5 Remarkable Mind-Tripping StarsShari Ryan is a Genius! Brilliantly written. I loved every single letter, word, and page created by this fabulous authoress. A DEFINITE favorite read of 2013.
MC, Chloe has a wild out-of-the box imagination, or so the author would like you to think. See she has these “Realistic Dreams”. I say this because, well to put it in simplistic terms, Chloe is drawn to Alex, which many believe he is imaginary, completely in her messed up mind. He’s not real, he’s imaginary . . . . Right? She supposedly has this psychological condition that lands her in an institution.
"I guess there’s a possibility that one day I’ll be able to have a life where love doesn’t appear and disappear every time I open or close my eyes"
Chloe has been through hell and back for many years, most of her life, due to her cold-hearted, evil ridden mother. Her dad is useless as he is “controlled” by her mother. Chloe’s escape from her real life is in her dreams that consume her once she is sound asleep. She travels to another place in time, like a Jumper. The mind is fragile, but at the same time so complex. The amazing mind blogging thing is if Chloe is injured in her “Realistic Dreams”, she wakes up with everything that has been inflicted on her.
"I see him standing by the window, looking out. He’s wearing a white button-down dress shirt, gray pinstriped slacks, and shiny brown leather shoes. I think I just learned what the phrase take my breath away means "
Alex . . . Alex is everything to Chloe even if he is just an illusion of her fragile mind. He is the only thing that makes her happy and feels loved. He is her life line, and her other half.
"I just want to evaporate into the sand with utter embarrassment after this beautiful-looking guy just saved me from drowning in only a few inches of water"
Schasm . . . I admit, first thing I did was look up the definition of this intriguing word.
It’s non-existent, just like Chloe’s Alex. This mind-trip is unforgettable and steals your last breath when you think all is calm. You become part of Chloe and Alex. You might think you have understood the complexity of what is going on, but in one millisecond, you start to doubt yourself and feel like you are completely off the wall and on the brink of Insanity.
I believe Alex is a real human being . . . DO YOU?
I dare you to take this wild ride and find out yourself. Pray that no one commits you to an asylum too. By the time you reach the very last page, you will feel a profound loss. Your mind will never be right; your heart will lose a beat or a few million. You will NOT forget about Chloe and Alex… hoping everything will be okay….
Oh did I mention… you have to wait for Book Two… Palpitations are an understatement. . Take the risk; face this alternating reality with all you have. This will blow your mind to smithereens.

Schasm Schasm Series Volume 1 Shari J Ryan 9781620152010 Books Reviews
I wanted so bad to like this book. The short description held so much potential for a book with twists and turns and never quite knowing what is real and what is not. The premise was solid - the execution was unfortunately weak and inexplicable at times.
No major spoilers here (beyond the posted description of the book) girl lives an unhappy life with an oppressive mother and she escapes by "drifting" in her mind to other places and times that seem very real to her. As the book progresses, the protagonist wonders if perhaps she is drifting to real places, or maybe her happy drifts are reality and her reality a nightmare? Cool idea. I was looking forward to reading about it.
And that is what I got ... for the first chapter or two. Everything looked to be heading in a promising direction until the protagonist meets the major secondary character. That moment in the story was like that moment where the first car in a fifty-car pileup veers into the wrong lane. After that it is just a matter of watching one bad thing after another unfold until the highway is a jumbled mess of wreckage.
Why? Because inexplicably the story turns into a swooning gushing teen romance every time these two characters wind up in the same place at the same time. No reason is ever given to why these two should be so immediately entangled in a hormonal/pheromonal love bath, but the same "my heart raced and my knees got weak and I couldn't think" routine happens each and every time the two encounter one another throughout the novel. I don't mind gushy love - but when it has no basis and just happens for no reason?
That made the story rather annoying to read, but even that could be forgiven if the author did not commit that sin of all sins telling rather than showing why major plot elements were justified. Remember that solid premise I mentioned? Despite the teen angst and overwhelming emotions, I remained eager to find out what was real and what was not as the trips to and fro between drifts started racing out of control. Do you know how we discover what is real? Someone who the protagonist doubts is real tells her that he is, in fact, real. And that was good enough for her.
I suppose I'm a little less trusting of people I only see when I am unconscious. Ah well.
I'm writing this review after having finished the entire Schasm Series trilogy, but hopefully I can give a fair, useful review without any spoilers. I got Schasm for 99 cents so I didn't expect much beyond the lovely cover but I was pleasantly surprised. The book quickly grabbed me in the first pages. The plot was enjoyable, somewhat suspenseful, and romantic. Chloe, the main character, diagnosed with either schizophrenia or multiple personality disorder, "drifts" between two different realities in her "illness". Author Shari J. Ryan created likeable characters that the reader quickly becomes invested in. Not only did the book capture me while I was reading but I found myself thinking about it during the day. I had no idea what was real and what wasn't in the book! I totally lost myself in this book and was haunted by it when it ended. I couldn't wait to read the rest of the series to find out what happens to Chloe and Alex and to learn what was real and what wasn't! Now I want to read the entire series again because I know there were things I missed the first time through. I have recommended this book to all my reading friends, and I highly recommend it for anyone who enjoys YA books or romantic adventures with a psychological twist. Another thing I loved about this book is that it wasn't a syrupy romance but was more a story about Chloe that just happened to include romance. Overall a great debut from a very promising author!
